While wines from the New World are renowned for their ripeness, the modern style of wines made in the south of France have both up-front fruit and the kind of structure that makes them a great match with food.
In fact, more club members seem to be moving back towards drinking French wines at the moment. Try this stunning mixed case and see why.
The Modern France mixed case costs £71 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines: Les Terres Rousses Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Vin de Pays d'Oc: Ultra crisp, minerally and bursting with fruit, this beautifully poised sauvignon is superb with fish dishes and seafood.
Domaine du Mage Le Rosé 2007, Cotes du Gascogne: Always a great favourite with the club, this is a dry but brilliantly fruit-driven rosé that is great on its own or with charcuterie, for example.
Les Terres Rousses Merlot/Syrah 2007, Vin de Pays d'Oc: Rich, soft velvety fruit is what is going on here, along with a touch of butter from the merlot and a hint of spice from the syrah - a perfect match with grilled food.
Domaine de la Souterranne Merlot Cuvée Guillaume 2006, Vin de Pays l'Aude: Winner of a bronze medal in the International Wine and Spirits Competition, this classic merlot has hints of tobacco and herbs on the nose with layers of deep ripe fruit. Ideal with richer foods and cheese or mushroom-based sauces.

One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
