Australia has come a long way since the first fruit-driven wines arrived here in bulk in 1985, and now a new breed of winemaker has begun to produce toned-down and subtle styles of wine that are more complex in style, while still retaining that trademark Aussie fruit.
No wonder Australia remains so popular with the wine-buying public.
The New Wave Australian mixed case costs £68 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Solora Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2006: Made by top winemaker Sis Siddons from cool-climate west Australian fruit, this zingy and super fresh wine has vibrant green and grassy fruit. A delight on its own or with fish.
Cranswick Lakefield Colombard/Chardonnay 2007: The Lakefield Nature Reserve on the Cape York Peninsula is one of Australia's largest nature reserves and is home to a wide variety of species, including the Sarus Crane, which is featured on the wine's label. The fresh citrus flavours of the colombard combine with tropical flavours from the chardonnay to produce a wine which is perfect for chicken, pasta or Asian cuisine.
Brown Brothers Tarrango 2006: Tarrango is a grape variety that is unique to Australia and has delicious flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry, redcurrant and a hint of spice. Very popular and ideal with light meats or smoked fish.
Cranswick Lakefield Shiraz/Cabernet 2007: The Cranswick Shiraz/Cabernet once again shows what this great winery can produce. This is lovely wine with flavours of mulberry fruit and dark chocolate with delicious hints of spice. Perfect with grilled red meats or rich pasta dishes.

One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
