The new breed of Portuguese wines have wonderful freshness and minerality with very clean fresh fruit. These are the product of dedicated winemakers who are working with excellent fruit grown in the harsh conditions that are so perfect for the grape to thrive.
The Portuguese mixed favourites case costs £92 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Vale da Clara Rose 2006, Douro: Made by the Bergqvist family at their beautiful eatate in the heart of the Port production area in the north of Portugal. This excellent table wine is made from a mixture of local grape varieties and has delightful aromatic flavours of fragrant apple and citrus fruit. Wonderful as a refreshing aperitif or with salads.
Vale da Clara Red 2006, Douro: Another superb wine from the Quinta de la Rosa estate which is owned by the Bergqvist family. This well crafted and supple red from indigenous local grape varieties is wonderfully spicy with touches of smoky raspberry and redcurrant fruit. A truly refreshing red for any occasion.
Montinho Sao Miguel 2005, Alentejano: Montinho means a small homestead on a hill and this modern-made spicy wine has delicious notes of blackcurrant and toast with full rich, ripe smoky fruit - delicious with red meats and charcuterie.
Sidonio de Sousa Reserva 2000, Bairrada: Gorgeous flavours of deep-layered complex fruit, minerals and smoky oak mingled with redcurrant, raspberry and strawberry flavours combine to make this wine a superb complement to grilled dishes and casseroles - top class.

One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
