Is cabernet sauvignon the king of red grape varieties? Well this thick-skinned, robust grape certainly ages superbly, especially when blended with other Bordeaux varieties, and elsewhere in the New World it produces wines with powerful structured fruit that are delicious and long lived. The British have always had a liking for a drop of 'claret' with our roast beef. Try these examples and find out for yourself.
The cabernet sauvignon mixed case costs £62 and includes three bottles each of:
Jean d'Alibert Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, France: Plump, juicy and smoky blackcurrant fruit with hints of herbs and spices. There is lots of immediate fruit here and warm, rounded fruit style as well. Soft, ripe and delightfully smooth.
Château du Pin-Franc 2005, France: This classic cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot blend has all the character of Bordeaux with subtle cedar, touches of cigar box and well defined ripe blackcurrant fruit - perfect with roast beef and meat dishes.
Rio Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Chile: Stone fruit flavours of cherries with a nice touch of smoke characterise this excellent example of cabernet sauvignon which is grown on the alluvial soils of the Andean foothills. A perfect match for grilled or barbequed meats.
Rattler Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, California: Full bodied and powerful, this wine has combined aromas of ripe plums, dried figs and cedar that that explodes with rich flavours of plums, blackberries and cassis. A classic Californian style with depth, weight and a touch of minerals. Great with rich foods and game.

One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
