Despite the changing trends for different styles of wines, merlot and shiraz have remained constantly popular for their rich, ripe fruit and smooth texture.
These are wines that always deliver good fresh flavours and are excellent with a wide range of dishes.
The Merlot and Shiraz mixed case costs £58 and includes three bottles of each of the following four wines:
Merlot Les Celliers du Prieuré 2006, France: A classic southern French Vin de Pays d'Oc, this juicy merlot is brimming with rich ripe fruit with delicious hints of caramel and plum.
Dwyka Hills Shiraz 2005, South Africa: Crisp, crunchy shiraz with sweet brambly and leather fruit and an appealing soft velvety texture with hints of spice and vanilla.
Santiago Merlot 2006, Chile:, Made in Chile's famous Maipo Valley, this 100 per cent merlot is an ultra-soft, mellow and velvety wine with loads of juicy fruit and flavours of plums and raspberries.
Solora Shiraz 2004, Australia: Made by famous wine maker Sid Siddons at the state-of-the-art Palandri winery in the Margaret River area of west Australia, this ever-popular shiraz benefits from the relatively cool climate of the region and has delicious flavours of eucalyptus and mint.

One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
