Triple Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins is confident he and his Team GB colleagues will soon be competing together in the Tour de France.
Wiggins, who in Beijing added individual and team pursuit golds to the gold and silver he won in those events in Athens four years previously, will be competing for Garmin-Chipotle next summer - but has left the door open to join up with Team GB should that dream become a reality.
"They are in the early stages of putting that together and it would be phenomenal if it does. We have got the talent so it is definitely likely now," said Wiggins.
"You need the right team - and a sponsor who is going to put up £8million a year, and they appear to have that. I don't know who it is yet but Sky have come on board and made a big commitment.
"And if a company like Sky gets involved with British cycling then a lot of others will as well.
"We already have the back-up team with (GB performance director) Dave Brailsford, who has put this whole thing together for British cycling, and (head coach) Shane Sutton.
"Then of course you need the riders and there are enough of us out there."
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
I had trouble shifting my +1 for the musical Imagine This, which opened last week at the New London Theatre. No-one was interested (one German friend would have come, but funnily enough I hadn’t thought to ask him), and while nobody actually said, “Sounds like a gas”, there were plenty of unprintable responses, averaging out at: “Holocaust – the musical? Um, no thanks . . . ”
Another winter rolls in and, to cheer our spirits, Oxfordshire Touring Theatre Company travel hither and yon through the county with colour, music and fun trailing in their wake. For those of us who live in villages these harbingers of the festive season are a welcome sight.
