TENNIS: North Oxford off to flier

Wilson OLTA Inter-Club League

North Oxford are up and running in Ladies Division 1, recording a 6-3 win over Cholsey with their top pair starring.

Kate Calnan and Louise Purton claimed all three rubbers to lead last season's runners-up to an emphatic victory.

Maddy Mitchell and Julia Brown won two-and-a-half rubbers at second pair, with each of the Cholsey couples claiming a point - albeit their first pair of Ces Wheeler and Ruth Ballantyne picking up two halves.

Banbury West End thumped North Oxford B 7-1.

Wendy Eves-Dickins and Katie Shires at first pair, as well as Alison Goult and Karen Taylor at No 2 were unbeaten in a one-side match.

Goring beat Wychwood 6-3, despite the efforts of Wychwood's top pair Jo Muddle and Stephanie Prew.

They collected two-and-a-half rubbers, but their teammates were unable to provide much support.

Banbury A came close to a whitewash against the B side.

Amanda Noble and Claire Foster, of the B team, won the first set against Jude Canning and Caroline Thom - and it proved their side's only score in a 8- defeat.

In the 2-Pair League, Cholsey A thumped Faringdon A 4-0 in Men's Division 1, dropping just seven games.

Five of these came in the last match of the day when Patrick Warburton and Jason Harrison beat Mark Kiff and Sjoerd Vogt 6-3, 6-2.

Thame and Norham Gardens fought out an exciting 2-2 draw.

Chris Duffy and Steve Bailey-Kennedy won both rubbers for Thame.
