How to reach the ground
Hales Meadow, Culham Road, Abingdon, Oxon. Tel: 01235 524405. Just outside Abingdon on A415, next to Abingdon Town F.C. (In circumstances where it has been agreed that the artificial pitch shall be
used, visiting teams should please note that spikes are not permitted).
The 1st and 2nd XI's had a generally successful season - one more win for each team would have put a different complexion on their respective league positions - and given the new make up of the
leagues the 2nds may well have been promoted. The 3rd XI suffered with a lack of consistency in the batting and
bowling, and when players were promoted due to injury and unavailability in the 1st and 2nd XIs.
This year sees a change in the captaincy for the 1st XI (Ed Tilley) and 2nd XI (Chris Butcher), while Dave Binningsley will guide the 3rd XI.
Vale's juniors' section continues to grow and more cricket for them is being sought. More commitment is being given to integrate juniors into the senior sides. Also we are entering a team into the Downs league, which will contain a number of junior players to give them more experience.
This year also sees the return of our Dutch visitors with a full programme of cricket, sightseeing and entertainment planned. Abingdon's Cricket Week will also take place with a full programme
envisaged.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
I had trouble shifting my +1 for the musical Imagine This, which opened last week at the New London Theatre. No-one was interested (one German friend would have come, but funnily enough I hadn’t thought to ask him), and while nobody actually said, “Sounds like a gas”, there were plenty of unprintable responses, averaging out at: “Holocaust – the musical? Um, no thanks . . . ”
Another winter rolls in and, to cheer our spirits, Oxfordshire Touring Theatre Company travel hither and yon through the county with colour, music and fun trailing in their wake. For those of us who live in villages these harbingers of the festive season are a welcome sight.
