Southern League new boys North Leigh did everything but score in a goalless Division 1 South & West draw away to their former Hellenic League rivals Bishops Cleeve.
Cleeve striker Gareth Hopkins's run and shot was comfortably saved by Richard Barrett in the Leigh goal after just 30 seconds, but the Yellows responded well, forcing two early corners after penetrating runs by Mark Threlfall and Ben Reardon.
The visitors almost broke the deadlock on the half-hour as Joe Burnell and Chris Allen had efforts blocked inside the Cleeve six-yard box.
Mark Simms's rising shot was well saved by Jamie Moore in the Cleeve goal, while Reardon's shot was blocked by defender Sam Avery.
After 72 minutes a goal-bound Simms shot from ten yards was handled by a diving Cleeve defender inside the six-yard box. The referee turned down their vehement penalty appeals. Simms was booked for his protest.
North Leigh were almost caught on the break with ten minutes remaining as Cleeve substitute Ed Ward saw his effort deflected wide.
North Leigh: Barrett, Reardon, Helby, Cooper, Huxley, Dodds, Burnell, McCabe (Jackson 90) , Allen, Simms, Threlfall ( Futcher 78). Subs not used: Grant, Hutter, Sadler.
One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
