OXFORDSHIRE'S bowlers had to toil for wickets on the first day of their Western Division game against Berkshire at Banbury yesterday.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Oxon were kept in the field for the whole of a rain-shortened day before dismissing their opponents for 315.
A flurry of strokes from Berkshire's contracted Hampshire player Mitchell Stokes got the visitors off to a flier.
He made 42 off 37 balls with eight fours before falling to a well-judged catch in the deep by Craig Haupt.
Berkshire were struggling a little at 100-4, but James Morris and Bjiorn Mordtt steadied the innings with a stand of 71, before the latter fell to off-spinner Richard Kaufman's first ball.
Kaufman went on to take four wickets, one with the aid of an excellent running catch from Luke Ryan.
Morris also fell to Kaufman, Oxon's match-winner against Shropshire, who had not been introduced until the 48th over in the seamer-friendly conditions.
The game started 45 minutes late because of a wet outfield, while rain at the end of the day prevented Oxon starting their reply.
One of the pictures on this page gives a good impression of the delights to be enjoyed at the Mole and Chicken on one of those sunny days that now seem as far as can be from our present situation.
Next week is The Oxford Times Wine Club Christmas Tasting and, with just four weeks to go until Christmas Day, it is an excellent opportunity to sample a specially-selected range of wines for the festive season.
‘I was the first person to discover that if you infected a person with Marmite, he would stand up and bark at the moon.” “Everybody under the age of 35 has the intelligence of raspberry jam.” “Children can hear vegetables hiding.”
There’s nothing King Couer-de-Loup likes more than a good battle: “We’ll march on King Florizel’s wet and wicked army,” he proclaims. His Queen is not so sure, however. She would rather her husband stayed around: there’s the christening of their daughter Princess Aurora to arrange for a start. And he certainly can’t go out and fight looking like that: “Your chain mail’s got a ladder in it,” she wails.
