Ex-U's boss pins faith in Patto

The most successful Oxford United manager of the past decade told the Oxford Mail last night: "Darren's still the best man for the job."

Ian Atkins, who four-and-a-half years ago took the U's to the top of Football League Division 3, after also bringing the club money-spinning FA Cup ties against Swindon Town and Arsenal, said Darren Patterson was as good as any other young manager in the Conference.

But he also acknowledged bosses live and die by results – "and Darren knows that".

This is only Patterson's first full season, and September has only just finished, yet already – with the U's in 20th place – there has been strong speculation that the manager hasn't got much more time left, unless results dramatically improve.

Atkins, who now works for Roy Keane as Sunderland's European scout, said: "The trouble in football now is that everyone wants instant success.

"People don't give you time, especially at a club like Oxford where some of the fans still think they should be in the Championship, which is an unrealistic target, and where expectations are so high."

Experienced bosses and coaches, who have achieved success at other clubs – such as Brian Talbot, Ramon Diaz, Graham Rix and even Jim Smith, in his second spell – have been unable to work the magic at the Kassam Stadium, so is managing Oxford United the impossible job?

"I don't think it is an impossible job," said Atkins, who promoted Patterson to youth team coach after he had finished playing when he was the U's boss.

Among the names touted by some fans as possibly being able to succeed at Oxford are young bosses Mark Cooper, of Kettering, and Mark Yates, of Kidderminster.

But Atkins, a qualified UEFA Pro Licence coach, who has managed in every division outside of the Premier League, said: "Darren's new to management and Oxford is a hard one to take on for your first go at it, but Darren knows the game, he's bright and – to my mind – he's still the best manager for the job.

Last Saturday's results, when Oxford United lost at Lewes and Hull City won at Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League were a painful reminder to U's fans that it was just four-and-a-half years ago that Atkins's Oxford United team and Hull were locked together at the top of League Two.

United even led 2-1, before slipping to a 4-2 defeat, and two months later Atkins found himself dismissed.

"People don't really understand the reasons for me going," he said.

"I never had a penny to spend, I had to cut the wage bill by £800,000 and had got the team to the top of the table – yet still you had the group OxVox trying to get me out."

Ian Atkins is quite right when he saya Oxford fans have unrealistic expectations. Most of us can still remember winning the Milk Cup, but that was 20 years ago. Truth be told, Oxford have probably had more managerial changes in the last ten fifteen years than anyone, although Newcastle might run us close. How many managed under Kassam alone? I respect Atkins views and he at least has first hand knowledge of Pattison. Perhaps, he's right? I just wondered, is there any way we could have a semi permanent stand at the "away" end. The stadium just doesn't have the atmostsphere of the Manor. Could we widen and lengthen the pitch and bring it closer to the crowd, might that help.

The Ox mail know how to brighten an otherwise dull day, the last paragraph of Atkins comments -or supposed comments made me chuckle at least.
"I never had a penny to spend, I had to cut the wage bill by £800,000 and had got the team to the top of the table – yet still you had the group OxVox trying to get me out."

OxVox did NOT try to get Atkins out,
all they stated in a press release was 'The manager is doing a fair job' or words to that affect- Nothing at all remotely like 'Trying to get him out' - Instead Mr Murray you should be commenting on the person who DID 'get atkins out' Firoz Kassam!!! And this after initially lying publicly saying when Questioned about rumors of Atkins going to Bristol Rovers ''It's news to me''!!!! Still, OxVox are a much easier target and unlikely to bite your bum eh?
Do some proper rsearch and find your courage sir.. Look behind the net curtains at kassams stadium and the real villains won't be far away.

No he's not, 'us Oxford fans' would like, occasionally, to see a half competent hard working team that occasionally at least gets a few good results together. What we're seeing is very different - apart from the BLIP that was the Cambridge match -then it was back to as you were at Lewes -yes LEWES ffs a 'team' of butchers bakers and false leg makers who prior to meeting our lot couldn't win a raffle if they brought all the tickets!! Too much to ask that we don't have these embarrassments on a regular basis?

anyone who went to watch oxford play under Ian atkins will know that a) the results were fair b) the football was diabolic (but got results and tight at the back which is the main thing at this level) c) The grumbling amongst the supporters was very tangible the majority of oxford fans want the world now and it ain't gonna happen patience I think the main thing to come out of the 'current crisis' is that managers in the past have been sacked to quickly into seasons and perhaps Merry in not sacking Patto is possibly going to teach the supporters a little patience. Also reading between the lines with what is going on though I wonder if Merry is getting cold feet with the problems he is having with Kassam? I think if Oxford was to buy the stadium I think the club would actually be quite a good investment which is I think what Merry knew but it hasn't quite gone like that! a note to add Ian Atkins would be a very good appointment if he was to come avaliable! no silly goals no pre madonna footballers crap football but would get results what the club need at the current time!

I remember the Atkins saga - yes, the immediate culprit was FK in not lining up a contract for the following season, but the background was virulent abuse directed at Atkins because we were dropping a bit off the pace. Every manager the same for last ten years - "stupid, useless, witless, clueless, bully, child-eater...".

So we get what we deserve and sometimes Chairmen take the easy route to buy time with the fans and shaft the manager.

I think it says it all about how far this club of ours has fallen in that the Atkins era now seems more palatable in comparison to what is served up nowadays. Yes it was horrid to watch and yes we failed to get promoted but I'd swap being bottom of the Conference in favour of that right now. It's not as if we're much easier on the eye currently......

I remember only too well the Atkins era Poor decisions baffling subs Negative teams boring some might say, Hardly lit up the football world when you left ? I keep hearing Oxford Fans want instant success, what football fans dont ? in truth most fans want a side who try there hearts out try to play football and not just launch the ball in the air look like they are being coached properly which would show in there organisation on the pitch and are proud to wear the shirt, get these basics right and we would all enjoy going to the games more the results might take longer but if it looks like we are making progress the fans will wait, I remember the game at the Manor Evertons Howard Kendell was probably one game away from the sack the rest as they say is history, yes Patto your under fire but we need to see some progress however little now, my feelings are Merry cant afford to replace Patto so lets get behind the Lads this Saturday Lets see a Performance and never forget we are Oxford, Let the Season Start Now

I remember traveling from Dublin for a midweek game , and we stayed in Kassams hotel, Ian Atkins was in the bar after the game and we had a couple of drinks with him.
He explained to me the way people were treated by FK. I could not believe it.
He was earning about the same as a tradesmen in Dublin at the time, and if he stayed at the hotel for midweek games he had to pay for the "privelege" . Two days later he was gone , I couldn't blame him.
