Green policies win city council contract

GREEN policies have helped an Oxford builders merchant to win a £750,000 contract from Oxford City Council.o Johnsons Buildbase, based in Watlington Road, Cowley, will supply plumbing and heating materials for the authority's council house improvement programme. It won the deal against competition from businesses throughout the UK and Europe.

Stephen Tall, the council's executive member for better finances, said: "Buildbase were the first builders merchant in the UK to have the Forest Stewardship Council award for sustainable timber at every branch.

"Their policy and statement of activities covers everything from office energy management through to the purchase of recycled and renewable sources.

"They also have a training programme for staff and a system for recycled packaging. The council takes seriously its responsibility to promote environmental sustainability. Awarding contracts to companies who also take their corporate responsibilities seriously is one way in which we can promote a greener Oxford."

Roy Mason, Buildbase's national partnering development manager, said: "We have worked hard to put environmental issues at the top of our agenda, because we know that many of our customers are asking about sustainability.

"We see the contract as a partnership and have listened carefully to the council staff we will be working with, then put in place the systems that will save them time and effort."

Buildbase has already built a dedicated stores area at its four-acre site in Cowley to support the council contract.

The company, which has its head office at Oxford Business Park, has 130 branches across the UK.

Its first branch was Johnsons Buildbase in Cowley, a long-established timber and builders merchant that had supplied materials for more than 200 years. It was named best national builders merchant in industry awards in 2003 and 2005.
