THE names of the Oxfordshire post offices which face the axe were officially released today.

Post Office is proposing to close 22 post offices across the county and replace a further five in West Oxfordshire with mobile vans, which could visit at set times for "restricted hours" each week.

The Post Offices earmarked for closure are:

  • Ardington
  • Begbroke
  • Childrey
  • Combe
  • Crowmarsh
  • Dalton Barracks, Abingdon
  • Farmoor
  • Fyfield
  • Grandpont, Oxford
  • Grimsbury, Banbury
  • Church Way, Iffley, Oxford
  • Villiers Road, Bicester
  • Long Wittenham
  • Orchard Way, Banbury
  • Stanmore Crescent, Carterton
  • Stanton St John
  • Upton
  • West End, Witney
  • Wolvercote, Godstow Road
  • Wootton, near Woodstock
  • Wootton Road, Abingdon
  • Wytham.

The five West Oxfordshire branches proposed for "replacement solutions" are Chadlington, Enstone, Great Rollright, Great Tew, and Tackley.

A six-week consultation period on the proposals starts today and people have until Monday, March 17, to comment.

Please don't shut Chadlington Post Office, it's the only one in the village. Doesn't anyone think of the old people in any of the local communities? It is absolutely disgusting.

If the Stanton St John post office closes, then anyone who doesn't drive ie the elderly, will find it almost impossible to get to their nearest post office. If they really feel constrained to make these cuts, why not the one at Barton. There is a good bus service into Headington from there.

The Barton Post Office is a very well used place - and therefore for the Post Office profitable - so lay off.

Only three people in Stanton St John without access to a vehicle. None of them are elderly.
A few neighbourly lifts into town might result.

Simon - do you really think it is necessary to be rude to somebody just because they make the perfectly viable suggestion that as Barton is on a good bus route to Headington maybe that postoffice should be considered?

There are plenty of post offices on the list that are busy and used but the post office seems to think that they should be shut, maybe they haven't looked at the right PO's at all. Maybe they should have considered bus routes etc.....

And explain to me how you can be so sure that there are only 3 people in Stanton st John without access to vehicles. And how indeed you know that none of them are elderly?
I am sure there are plenty of people in Barton that could be neighbourly and offer older people lifts if (which won't happen - because hey it's Barton and we all have to protect those in the less well off areas don't we?!)the Barton PO had been earmarked for closure.

In response to Simon of Barton. These are the facts. From Barton Post office to Headington post office is 1 mile .It is also 1 mile to Risinghurst Post Office.(AA route planner)So residents of Barton have the luxury of 2 post offices in close proximity and on very regular bus routes if Barton was to close.Stanton St John has a very spartan bus service both to Headington and Wheatley and much further mileage to travel. The closure of the rural Stanton Post office could also cause the closure of the village stores.Basically this will all put more cars on the road .I to am intrigued to know Simon has such imtimate knowledge of the car owners in Stanton ??

Chadlington post office has been earmarked for an office to be "Hosted" and if they can not do so there will be a mobile service! By "Hosted" they mean they will try and find a local premises, a local shop or even a pub, that will host the post office services. The BBC website has a link to a PDF file from the post office providing details of closures, hosted and mobile services.

There's a slight problem with openign the file so you will need to download it and then open it.

I wonder with the closure of the Wootton Road post office in Abingdon where all the locals will now cash their giro's?

DONT EVEN BOTHER TRYING TO SAVE THEM- WE WENT THROUGH ALL THAT IN SUMMERTOWN & NORTH PARADE & IT DIDN'T MAKE THE SLIGHTEST DIFFERENCE. ONCE THE DECISION IS MADE THAT'S IT, YOU JUST HAVE TO FIND ALTERNATIVES AS WE DID, HOWEVER INCONVENIENT.

And because of there being no post office in Summertown or North Parade we now are faced with having to pay a 10 percent surcharge if we want to post our mail in Mailboxes because they had to employ somebody to take on the extra work - not a lot when you are posting one letter but a heck of a lot if you are posting lots as I do....

I am very upset that the Lower Wolvercote office is earmarked for closure.

The people who run it are incredibly helpful and friendly, and it is a pleasure to visit.

This is in stark contrast to my other local branch, where the staff seem to treat most customers with utter contempt.

The problem with the current Post Office Closure programme is that the general public, and the media have been conned into thinking that only underused loss making Post Office Branches are being closed. This is not so – well used viable Post Offices are being closed tearing the heart out of the community whilst some of those costing us (sorry PO Ltd) £17 per transaction are being left open! More and more evidence is coming to light daily!

All the comments and complaints made so far mean nothing in the face of what is really happening – the systematic destruction of the Post Office Service in this country.

Post Office Ltd have carried out a first class closure programme to date - phasing the closures in small enough groups so as not to attract national media attention, and in such a way that each post office was fighting its neighbours to be the one reprieved.

The Post Office in the UK is a service, NOT a business. There is a big difference in running a service on business-like grounds, and running it as a business!

If this does not come to an end quickly then we will lose the Post Office Service in the UK altogether – that is what they want – a few Post Offices in the larger towns where we all will have to go to post anything, and possibly not just parcels. Pensions and banking etc are a smoke screen! The next thing would be deliveries to remote areas – those in the fens and the wilds of Wales and Scotland etc will have to collect their mail from the nearest large town. Then the Post Office could be run as a business – but not before!

Local groups are now getting together to get the true message out to the nation and to stop the closure of well used viable Post Office Branches.

Take a look at the website http://www.postoffic
eclosures.org.uk/ which is the home of CAPOC (Communities Against Post Office Closures).
