Roaring thanks from the skies

4:00pm Tuesday 12th August 2008

THE RAF offered families a thank you for their support at a special celebration.

RAF Benson's annual Families' Day was a private event to thank family members and dependents of service personnel for their support over the past year.

The RAF Falcons dropped in to open a two-hour flying display and hundreds watched as pilots flying Chinook, Hunter, Spitfire, Messerschmitt and Hercules aircraft ripped through the clouds.

The Red Arrows and the Blades Aerobatic Team also showed off their talents to the crowds.

A static display of vintage aircraft, Merlin and Puma helicopters, and the Eurofighter Typhoon was also a big draw before the day ended with an Auction of Promises, hangar party and firework display.

More than £3,500 was raised for Combat Stress, the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust.

Group Captain Paul Lyall, station commander, said: "This was a fantastic day, which has not only raised a significant amount of money for charities, but, more importantly, is our way of thanking families and loved ones for their continued support over a demanding year."
