Help sought with memorial project

A BOOK detailing the lives of all the men on Wallingford's war memorial has inspired similar research in Woodcote.

The Woodcote War Memorial Project is well advanced but has hit two major snags that project leader Mary Hulbert would like people's help with.

She said: "The project was inspired by the book For Your Tomorrow, by Andy Russell and Gary Skinner, which gives such wonderful details of all the men on the Wallingford memorial.

"But we have come up against two problems and we hope someone may be able to help us with some details. The granite memorial was built by monumental masons Honeybone and Sons of Wallingford.

"We have been trying to find out about them but without success.

"There is a 1932 directory listing the firm but nothing since then."

Mrs Hulbert said: "We would love to hear from anyone who knows what happened to the company and anything of its history. It is unlikely there are any records still around about the Woodcote commission but we would like to know more about this family firm."

The second stumbling block to the project is the name George Jacob. It appears on the war memorial but no one has been able to find out anything about him, where he fought, where he died, or what regiment or service he was with.

Mrs Hulbert said: "It would be awful not to have anything about him when the book comes out in 2010, the 90th anniversary of the unveiling of the memorial.

"We have tried reversing the name in case it was wrong on the memorial but we have drawn a complete blank."

There are 23 names on the war memorial from the First World War and seven from the Second World War. Anyone who can help is asked to contact Mrs Hulbert on 01491 680494.
