The news that there is to be a £1bn investment in the Harwell Science and Innovation campus is a welcome sign of confidence in the local economy in these troubled times.
It is also a further sign that Oxfordshire will be a major growth point for some time to come.
As the debate rumbles on about the scale of housing to be permitted in the county, whether homes should be built in the Green Belt and whether our infrastructure can cope, the prospect of a further 5,000 jobs at Harwell can only intensify discussions.
As UKAEA itself acknowledges, the 5,000 new workers will need somewhere to live and will place added pressure on our overloaded infrastructure.
These are all questions that need to be addressed. The investment in the local economy is a welcome one but it must be matched by significant and sensitive investment in roads, homes and public transport, if we are to continue to enjoy the surroundings that make Oxfordshire such a great place to live.
