Homes disarray

Our report on the future of the Grenoble Road housing development highlights the disarray that surrounds the strategic planning system in this country.

Frankly, the Government is making it up as it goes along.

Strategic planning has been taken out of the hands of authorities like Oxfordshire and placed in the hands of the South East regional authority or office. Its plan includes the suggestion for 4,000 homes off Grenoble Road but never considered the idea of 15,000 homes around Weston-on-the-Green.

To describe this approach as piece-meal is an understatement.

Weston Otmoor drives a coach and horses through the South East Plan. If the Government is serious about it then it should tear up the South East Plan and start again. It makes no sense to do that and toss out all the careful work that went into it. It makes even less sense to decide a scheme of the scale of Weston Otmoor in isolation.
