ALMOST 100 protesters demonstrated about animal rights in the city on Saturday.

Campaigners waving placards and photographs of Felix, a monkey used in experiments, in a cage gathered at Martyrs' Memorial and later dispersed in groups to various parts of the city to broadcast their 'Fighting for Felix' campaign.

The activists want to see an end to experiments on animals and are calling for work to be halted on the new animal laboratory in South Parks Road.

The memorial was cloaked in banners and photos - Fight for Felix victim of Oxford University extremism, Stop the animal labs and Stop the Monkey Death Camp.

Amanda Richards, a member of campaign group Speak, said there was growing concern about the increasing use of animals for medical experiments.

She said: "Experiments are being carried out on Felix at Oxford University. These experiments cause severe and substantial suffering and must be stopped. Hideous experiments are being carried on Felix's brain. He is kept in a cramped cage, deprived of many essentials. It's absolutely outrageous."

Felix was featured in a BBC2 documentary programme last November called Monkeys, Rats and Me. His supporters say he will endure years of suffering and will remain imprisoned for years before being put to death. The Home Office granted a licence to Oxford University to carry out experiments as part of the continuing medical research in the hope of finding a cure for diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers.

Oh my god, they are testing to make our lives better. How many of these protesters benefit of have a family member benefit from animal testing? I am sure some of them are or are related to some one who is diabetic?

Use your brains for a change, if its for medical tests its fine cosmetics is wrong.

Almost 100? Pathetic. Looks like science has won this argument.

I thought it was very poor style of the SPEAK Campaign group on Bonn square on Saturday to have to resort to stealing attention directed at the Sugar Creek Trio which they deserve for their effort of playing music. Also, I think this approach can only hurt whatever goal SPEAK are trying to achieve.

They cannot get their own attention because they have nothing revealing to say that people would be interested to hear. It is a good idea to do your homework and research some new facts and proof to back them before campaigning. Then you could even find more support among your listeners for whatever cause you are pursuing.

Of course, this means SPEAK might actually have to work hard instead of just annoying people by shouting repeated phrases at the expense of others.

Yeah i do hope science wins this arguement.

And for the protests, do it in silence! i agree with Joachim Kuebart that the protests are repetative and anoying when your out shopping. Also i dont want your flyers when / if your handing them out. Also dont get offended when i politly say no then you harrass asking why, only to then confront me when i say i agree with the testing.

If you can stand in the street shouting your feelings, you should accept mine when i quietly say mine.

i would love to know if these protesters would accept medical help if they needed it in a hospital? most if not all procedures have at one time or other been tested on animals.
Also, why do they think they have the right to scare people when they are out shopping?
I thought the lab was there in part to ensure better conditions for the animals - so the animal rights people think this is wrong do they?
They need to stop terrorising people or face the consequences

If those 100 protesters cared about the animals as much as they shout they do, then they'd step in and offer themselves for medical research instead!

I hope not one of those 100 protesters have EVER touched any medical treatment whatsoever.

I think people have basically got bored of hearing the SPEAK peoples story. You have to remember what it is they are fighting for, and be it 100 or 1 person - that person can make a difference. If you took some time to really look at the awful suffering of these caged animals you would probably look away and pretend it was not happening, but it is and these people have been campaigning long and hard, in all weathers. I am so sad that they seem to be so alone in this awful saga, but they must never give up, no matter what, they are doing the right thing.
