THE Oxford Mail's newlook website has been unveiled bringing our readers more news, sport and videos.

Our new site is designed to build on the success that we have enjoyed in recent years and it contains some exciting new sections and a bright new look which we hope will make our readers' online experience more enjoyable.

The most striking change is the homepage, which is now a one-stop shop for all your news and information.

It contains our pick of the best stories of the day, a constantly updated feed of national news, sport and entertainment and an at-a-glance overview of the most popular stories, video and pictures.

As well as a window into the news of the day, the homepage acts as a vital information source.

At the top, you will see a weather icon which reflects what the weather is actually doing, and if you click on it, it will give you the forecast for the coming days.

Also on the homepage — and throughout our site — is the new live travel and what's on feed. This brings you up-to-the-minute information about traffic accidents, roadworks and rail delays in the Oxfordshire area , so you can easily see what's happening and alter your travel plans accordingly.

If you're looking for something to do, click on the What's On link next to Travel to see a list of events taking place in the area right now.

The second most striking change to our site is the navigation. Until now, our sections have been listed down the left hand side of the screen. Now they sit across the top.

Click on any one section, and the second level of the bar will give you a breakdown of the features within that section.

A major change to the way you can get involved in the site is that we now require all people wishing to leave comments to be registered as users.

It means filling out a simple form and then waiting for a confirmation email to arrive in your In Box Reflecting our desire to get reader's more involved with the site, we have created a new section called Your Say, which groups together some of our site's best-loved features - blogs, columns, letters and the forum — all in one place.

Our new look sites have some new commercial opportunities that should really benefit our advertisers in driving as much traffic to their sites as possible. The new local advertisers panel, allows local businesses to take a cost effect button advert from as little as £50 a month, as well as offering additional opportunities such as advertising videos online within key sections of our web sites.

Our jobs, homes and cars sections although looking different and offering more exposure to our advertisers, will be undergoing a revamp over the coming months, to make them even more search engine friendly. This will ensure that whenever you search within any of the three areas the advertiser will get the maximum exposure each time.

The one thing that has not changed is our commitment to bring you quality, up-to-the-minute news, sport, entertainment and information.

Editor Simon O'Neill said: "We have put a lot of hard work into this site and we hope that our readers like what they see.

"We're sure our readers will bear with us as we are trying to provide a site with increased and improved content and something they can get involved in as well."

We hope you enjoy it and look forward to receiving your comments either online or via email.

Yes - I quite like this. It always takes a while to get used to changes but this redesign makes much better use of the available space and I'm sure that people will like it once they are used to it.

Just noticed "Mums to be blogs" really does need a hyphen! "Mums to-be blogs" makes much more sense!

Mark L,

No, your vision is fine. We have had to suspend the archive for a couple of days as we import everything over.
It should be up and running very soon.

Looks great, nearly as good as the Guardian website on which it seems to be based.

Why don't you make the "OXFORD MAIL" logo in the masthead bigger? That would look even better. The same goes for the masthead on your "HERALD" website.

I, like Mark L, mourn the loss of the ability to search the site, or the loss of my ability to see the search box!

Help!!!!!

Minor issue: On my browser the text is very close to the left hand margin which makes the page look very unbalanced. With the favourites box displayed text is almost touching left page side

Unfortunately this is because the favourites panel does not display over the page but in the margin of the page, to display the page correctly you will need to close the favourites panels.

Same problem with my browser (Firefox) which isn't connected with the favourites, the whole left-hand column is right against the the margin.

Great new look to the website BUT

The website takes ages to load now on mobile devices.

And the photos that go with the stories seem to be very low resolution in some cases and fine in others.

Do you now take pictures using mobile phones?

It's good. A lot of hard work and thought has gone into the site. And there is a LOT of content.

My suggestions:

1) Change the font on the news stories. It is not the clearest font and slightly difficult to read. If you get in close you can see it is pixelated (great word). This breaks up the typeface: not a good effect for content you want to read, rather than skim.

IMO the old font was more effective.... you noticed the stories and not the font!

2) Move the stories, your main content, to the centre of the page -or make the section wider. It looks rather apologetic at present, rammed up against the left hand side and dwarfed by other links/content.

Just minor points - it is a very good site.

I agree with the last comment: hardly anything is going into the archive for September.

And there doesn't seem to be a search function any more.

And I get irritated by the "More like this" link that appears beneath every article. Under certain articles it looks crass and tactless.

The search function has disappeared, despite promises to reinstate it. I used the 'contact us' facility to enquire about this and have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledhgement, let alone a reply. What's the point of providing an on-line contact procedure if if it's not attended to?

Levi Reid left Oxford because two thirds of his weekly wages were spent on petrol! He even tried staying in digs to afford playing for Oxford but couldn't justify leaving a partner and son at home. He hopes to find a FULL-TIME position with a club in the Midlands.

I dislike everything shoved to the left margin - and I don't have a favourites box displayed, the text is right to the edge of the screen.
I hate having to learn a new layout. There was nothing wrong with the old one.
This gives me nothing I want, and I may not bother using it any more.

As a former business journalist and designer of an award-winning financial website, I really do not like the revamped OM site. I agree with 'Maureen, scottside', who said the old one was fine. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' is a good rule – otherwise it is simply change for change's sake.
The positioning of the text on the browser page is poor (on both sides), the font is totally unsuitable – the use of trendy grey on a white background is fine for foppish web designers but difficult to read. And asking people to register and remember yet another username and password is simply a turn-off. Readers want immediate access to a site without all that registration nonsense – otherwise, they quickly lose interest and zap off to somewhere else. Go back to the drawing board, Malcolm and rethink your approach, design and presentation!

Really not liking the new site, can't find anything...including the sorry which is on the front page of todays Oxford Mail, which is what I logged on for !! Very little actual news as well, mainly features and sports. Again I agree with previous comments, everything is wedged up against the side of the screen making it very unpleasant to read and the lack of any obvious search box is ridiculous. I hope somebody at Newsquest is going to take note of these repeated themes of complaint and actually do something, the new site is a bit of a shambles.

SNJ, Oxford says...

After almost six weeks of not being able to find anything on the Oxford Mail site, I have realized that Google is the answer. Just search for "Oxford Mail" + whatever, and it always finds it immediately. Google is always up to speed with what is on the site.

I like to link to old stories: when are they going to be put in the archive?

The only really good thing about this new site is that people now have to register before making comments. A little political incorrectness can be refreshing, but many of the remarks on the old site were just stupid.

Hi
I'm liking the new look and feel of the site, but most frustrated at the lack of search options!
I know you've suggested a separate link to Archives, but I'd prefer to see a search box on the main page if possible. Thanks
