Floods: Extra £40,000 handed over

MORE Government money is being given to west Oxfordshire to help with the aftermath of last summer's flooding.

The district council has been awarded £40,000 out of a national pot of £1m to help flood-hit families still living in temporary accommodation.

The area, the worst hit of all the districts in Oxfordshire, still has an estimated 260 households in the process of being repaired.

The council has free rein to allocate the money as it sees fit, including special help with accommodation, fuel bills, safety checks and even access to laundry facilities.

The extra money was announced today by Floods Recovery Minister John Healey and is only available to councils with more than 200 households still displaced. More than £600,000 has been given to Kingston-upon-Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

What we really want of course is not access to laundry facilities, but flood defences and maintenance work to be carried out.
