Fake prescriptions nurse struck off

6:53pm Tuesday 26th August 2008

A nurse from Didcot who conned Oxfordshire pharmacists out of almost 900 cancer pills for his dying uncle in Africa has been struck off.

Borry Jatta, 40, used fake patient prescriptions to cheat pharmacies - including two in Didcot - out of the powerful prostate cancer drugs, which he sent back to The Gambia.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council heard that Jatta, who was working at Wallingford Medical Practice, got the tablets from three pharmacies between August and December 2007, by pretending he could pick up the pills on patients' behalf.

He claimed family pressure drove him to obtaining the 884 tablets from Tesco stores in both towns and Boots in Didcot. The panel also heard that he was in debt to his uncle who had cared for him and his six siblings.

Panel chairman Rachel O'Connell said he was a nurse with 15 years' experience and should have known better. She said it was in the public interest that he should be barred.
