A spelling error caused embarrassment after contractors for Oxfordshire County Council misspelled Abingdon on a sign.

The sign, at Radley railway station, is spelled Abington, a town in Scotland.

Abingdon town councillor Tim Oates said: "The whole station has just been refurbished and I noticed the sign in the upper segment is spelt Abington.

"Somebody in Oxfordshire County Council should have an embarrassed face on them.

“Obviously, they didn't do much in the way of proofreading. These things shouldn't happen, but they do. It was more in amazement than anything else.

"This is a signpost pointing to the neighbouring town and they should be getting it right."

Ian Hudspeth, county council cabinet member for transport, said: "The work was carried out by county council contractors.

"We would like to apologise for the spelling error and have spoken forcefully with our contractors to ask why this happened in the first place and to ensure the mistake is rectified as soon as possible.

"To say that we're angry about it would be something of an understatement."

What a shame that Mr Oates cannot find it in himself to thank the county council, First Great Western and Network Rail for spending £1 million at the station, but instead chooses to focus on a minor mistake that will be put right.

Quite right gwr2006! All this fuss over something that is so easy to correct. But there is always someone who will find fault I'm afraid.
