Thieves broke into a filling station in Eynsham earlier today.
They climbed a fence at the side of the Esso filling station on the A40 and gained entry through the roof at about 3am.
PC Rob Offord, of Thames Valley Police, said: "Although the offenders did not get into the offices, they were clearly attempting to steal cash from either the cashpoint or from inside the manager’s office."
He said at the time of the incident a dark coloured Ford Mondeo, or a similar saloon car, pulled up at the petrol station and somebody got out and used the cashpoint.
PC Offord said: "It's possible they may have witnessed something suspicious and I urge them to come forward."
Anyone with information should call PC Offord on 0845 8 505 505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
