11:02am Sunday 31st August 2008

A builder who is thought to have been crushed beneath iron girders on a Witney building site has died, hospital bosses revealed today.

The 28-year-old, who has not been named, was airlifted to hospital following the incident at the Marriotts Close site at 9am on Friday.

He suffered life-threatening injuries and staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford described his condition as critical.

This morning, Sarah Bergin, a spokesman for Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, confirmed that the man had died.

She said: "The man involved in the accident in Witney died late in the afternoon yesterday."

Ms Bergin added that the trust would not be releasing the man's identity.

The victim was operating a cherry picker vehicle at the time of the incident and the Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

The accident site in Marriotts Close is part of a £50m redevelopment bringing new shops, houses and a multi-storey car park.

The development is expected to open next Autumn.
