Oxford City Council has a habit of being on the wrong end of Government legislation. In the days of Conservative government, it was the poll tax and council tax that always seemed to leave it out of pocket.
Today, under a Labour government, it is the concessionary fare scheme for pensioners. Council taxpayers in Oxford are effectively being asked to subsidise the journeys of people from outside the city as well as of those from within the boundary.
While this is true of every authority, attractive cities like Oxford bear an unfair burden.
Effectively, we have another Government initiative that has been underfunded and the council taxpayer has to take the burden.
