Landlord wins award for second year running

3:53pm Wednesday 7th May 2008

A WANTAGE landlord is celebrating after winning a top trophy for the second year in a row.

Paul Hexter, of the Royal Oak in Newbury Street, was presented with the award for the White Horse Pub of the Year on St George's Day.

Neil Crook, chairman of the White Horse Branch of CAMRA, the campaign for real ale, handed Mr Hexter the award. He said: "Paul's dedication to serving a wide range of real ales from around the country in first-class condition has been recognised by our members, who have once again voted the Royal Oak the best in the area."

The Edwardian street-corner pub serves at least six real ales either by hand pump or direct from the cask. The West Berkshire Brewery has brewed special beers for Mr Hexter, who bought the pub in 1983. One was called Dr Hexter's Healer and the other Dr Hexter's Wedding Ale which was brewed for his wedding to wife Frankie in 1997.
