Antiques Roadshow returns to city
Fiona Bruce

THE Antiques Roadshow is coming to Oxford for the first time in more than a decade.

The team will be filming at Hertford College in Catte Street on June 28, and are hoping to unearth a host of forgotten treasures from the attics and closets of people in the city and county.

The new series, which will be screened in the autumn, will see Crimewatch presenter Fiona Bruce - herself a former Hertford College student - take over from Michael Aspel.

She said: "Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. It will feel weird going back to Hertford as a person with a job rather than a student. Hopefully, I will be able to show my tutors I didn't turn out too badly after all."

A college spokesman said: "We were delighted to be approached by the BBC. The students think it is great."

The last time the show was filmed in Oxford was at Christ Church in 1997.

Then, among the more interesting objects brought in to be inspected by experts was a selection of photographs of young girls taken by Christ Church don Charles Dodgson - Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll. One of the photographs was valued at £5,000.

The programme also visited Witney in 2001 and Blenheim in 1994.

Series editor Simon Shaw said: "The team are all looking forward to visiting Oxford.

"It is always exciting to see what will come to light, and we regularly see between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors on the day. Despite the high turnout, everyone will get to see an expert."

Some of Britain's leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

People with furniture or other large items can send details and photographs to Antiques Roadshow, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR or email antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk
